Why are Arts in Education So Important for Children?

arts in education

The fine arts in education have been cut over the years even though they bestow many benefits to children.

Over the past several years, as budgets in school districts have been tightened, usually the first areas to be cut are fine arts programs. Music, visual art, and theater programs have been gradually scaled back and cut from many schools around the country. And, yet, arts in education have been shown to be so important to the development of children and are complementary to learning in other subject areas. Here are some of the reasons why arts in education are so important.

Fosters Creativity

Creative thinking is an important part of arts programs that is hard to replicate in a science or math class. Children are able to express themselves and learn more about themselves in the process. And creative thinking will serve your child well when they grow up and move on into the workforce.

Improves Performance in Other Subjects

Studies have shown that the skills children learn in fine arts programs spill over into other parts of their academic achievement. Children who participate in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for an academic achievement (such as making honor roll) or participate in a math or science fair than children who do not.

Builds Self-Confidence

Being good at math or science can certainly do wonders for a child’s self-confidence. But if you’re one of those kinds of people who get stage fright when they deliver a speech, you might be able to appreciate what the arts can also do for a child. Getting up in front of a crowd and singing, or playing an instrument, or acting can definitely give a child the ability to step out of their comfort zone and learn valuable skills about performing for a crowd.

A Sense of Perseverance

The arts are hard. You will almost certainly see your child get frustrated as they try to learn and master a musical instrument or a visual art form. They may even want to quit at times. But sticking with it will teach them that hard work and perseverance pays off. That kind of mindset will stick with them for the rest of their lives and turn them into the leaders of tomorrow.
