Stimulate your Child’s Creativity!

Kids are naturally inquisitive and you can help them develop their creativity!

Today’s culture does not lend itself well to stimulating children’s creativity. Movies, TV, and video games all take place in a predefined universe. While they can do some good in moderation, children are more often overindulging and this is having a negative impact on their creativity. Today we are going to explore ways you can foster your child’s natural sense of wonder. The future will belong to those who can get creative in order to solve problems, so let’s get your child started today!

Encourage their Curiosity

From birth, children show themselves to be naturally inquisitive. They seem to look at everything as though looking at it for the first time. You can take this natural sense of wonder and foster it in your trips around town. When visiting the department store, use it as an opportunity to create stories with your child, using the clothing as inspiration.

Reading Together is Huge

Reading promotes the development both of literacy skills and the imagination. Have your child pick out a book every day, and don’t just read the story from front to back yourself. Encourage your child to take part in the story-telling process! While the story is being read, ask your child their opinions on the characters and how they should sound when they speak!

Promote Creativity in Safe Spaces

Children should have a safe space to exercise their creativity without fear. Setting up a “creativity corner” in a room in your house is a good way to do this. Stock this corner with play dough, crayons, paint, paper, and other items to encourage and indulge their creative impulses. You can also cover the floor of this space with a tarp to encourage your child to get messy without fear of ruining your floor!

Bring Creativity to Other Subjects

While creativity is central to artistic subjects like Art and Music, you should encourage your child to apply their creative skills to other subjects. The STEM curriculum is a perfect place for your child to demonstrate that they can think outside the box, and their budding creativity will thrive in these areas too!
