Helping your child to enjoy reading can be somewhat of a challenge. There are a lot of distractions going on around all of us all the time. Sometimes even adults have a hard time sitting down and cracking a book. So, how can you help your child learn to love reading? Let’s take a look at some helpful tips.
Set a good example.
Children look up to their parents. They look to them to teach them good manners, how to dress, and how to spend their down time. If you’re spotted reading from time to time, your child will probably consider giving books a try. After all, if you’re into them then there must be something worth exploring in the pages of a book. To reinforce this, you could also read a book that they might enjoy. Something simple from the children’s section that you can read together will be a fun way to bond and develop good reading habits.
Let them read what they want.
Children might choose to read magazines or comic books and this may seem like a bad thing. However, any reading practice is good practice. Rather than trying to control what they read, help them cultivate their reading skills in a way that is interesting and comfortable for them. After all, what could start as a fashion magazine interest could one day develop into a love of silver screen biographies. What could begin as a fascination with superheroes could become a love for detective stories. What you’re trying to do is help your child fall in love with books so that they will become avid readers. Without the spark of interest, this will become an uphill battle. Thus, it’s worth taking the child to the library and seeing where their imagination takes them.
